    Here is my astrophotography setup.

The scope is an Orion 200mm f/4 Newtonian Astrograph, on an HEQ5 Pro mount. It is really a catadioptric Newtonian, since I never use it without a Televue Paracorr 2 coma corrector in the focuser.

The imaging camera is a modified Canon 350D.

The guide scope is a KWIQ guider with QHY5 guiding camera, which replaces the finder. This arrangement keeps the assembled weight within reasonable limits for the HEQ5.

I balance the rig with the imaging and guide cameras in place. Then I switch to an eyepiece and finder for alignment. Once the goto is aligned, I switch back to the camera and guider. Any fine-tuning of the alignment for composition is done using the guider image on the laptop.

I have stuck plastic cable clips at strategic points on the mount and rings. This has greatly improved my cable management. Of course, I need to leave enough slack to allow for mount movement, but the slack loops are fairly small and don't get tangled. Most importantly, the entire weight of each cable is not dangling from the camera connector.

    Orion Astrograph and HEQ5 Pro.

Closeup of imaging camera and guide scope. The green tape on the back of the QHY5 is a double layer of masking tape to dim the excessively bright pilot light.

Here are a couple of images of my new setup:

The imaging scope is an Astro Tech AT72ED with the mini50 guider mounted alongside. Still need to purchase an extension to get focus but it looks promising based on the visual work I've done with it so far I've currently got both mounted on a simple ADM universal Vixen-size rail so I may need to do some testing to see if I need a dual-saddle mount to get the dec balanced properly.

    Kevin,

That is a very nice looking setup! Looks perfect for travel also! I have been eyeing the AstroTec scopes, very impressed with some images from them I have seen here on the forum.

    Thanks for posting! Clear Skies!

Thanks Jen and Jeff! I think rather than get the focuser extension I'm just going to bite the bullet and get a field flattener which will also move the camera back far enough to achieve focus. It should be here by the weekend which as of now is scheduled to be rainy, so it may be close to Christmas before I can get time to test everything out.

This is my current setup in my backyard observatory. Here I was trying to have always ready for imaging with modded dslr on 300mm lens (Rubinar 300 f4.5) and Starlight Xpress MX916 (or dslr) on 1000mm (newtonian scope f5). And it works even on overloaded HEQ5 mount...

    Cool setup kbeverage!

I'm thinking of getting that Orion mini guide scope kit too. Pretty sweet deal, I must say. Are you happy with it so far?

I really like the mini50 setup! Once I got the calibration issues figured out so that it wouldn't time out on the dec portion it's been a real help with imaging. Later today I should be getting a package from ScopeStuff with a mounting bracket so I can piggyback the mini50 on the AT72, then I'll be able to fully utilize the ADM bar so I can get the dec balance dialed in; it works OK right now but PHD has to struggle a bit to keep the dec near the centerline on the graph.
