Default Ultima 11 Celestron, to buy or not to buy

I have an opportunity to buy a Celestron Ultima 11 for 800 dollars. The guy only used it like 3 times, says he paid 4000 for it. I am fairly new to astronomy, and have a etx-90ec, celestron sky scout, and a pair of 15x70 binos. I have heard that the mounts are not the sturdiest things on this scope. I don't know if this is too much scope for me (not physically). I am going to look at it tomorrow. Should I buy it? Thanks

    Check this Web site out:

It will give you an idea of the scope etc.... The above link is the general pricing page but it you browse the site it will give you the scopes dedtails history etc...

Having said that I own a CPC1100 ...and absolutely positively love the darn thing BUT I'm 66 and I have mine pier mounted in an observatory ... I would NOT have purchased it IF I had to lug that sucker outside and set it up every night....

Rod Molise has stated in his used SCT guide that the Ultima 11 is "borderline as far as sturdiness and hardly a scope suited for serious imaging."

Is it possible he was referring to the mount? The U11 OTA and optics from that era are nice, especially with an aftermarket focuser and mirror lock modification. The mount was a different story...

The OTA is easily worth $800 if its in good condition, and could be mated with a sturdier, more contemporary mount...

www.telescopebluebook.com I found its history incomplete and for at least one telescope different from my experience witht the same telescope. IMHO, Rod Mollise does a superior job on his website "Used CAT Buyer's Guide" at http://skywatch.brainiac.com/used/used_sct.pdf

While it seems the OP's question may now be moot:

Telescope Reviews: 11" Celestron Ultima, to buy or not to buy

Uncle Rod's analysis of the U11 is based on the mount, not the OTA... Celestron didn't make any changes to the U8 mount, and basically plopped a bigger, heavier 11" OTA on the U8's mount. While it worked OK for the U8, it was marginal for the bigger, heavier tube...
