Default PAS Speaker and TopicThis Friday?

Any PAS (SF/SJ Bay Area astro club) members who know if there is a speaker
and the topic next Friday? Posting to the PAS Yahoo Group just meets with a
    delay.

Hmmm, all their links at Foothill (where they're hosted) are hosed, too:

    Maybe they shut down?

That gives me an idea though. Maybe I'll just call the college. I live 150
miles from there, so I do not have the luxury of waiting for them to respond
at the last minute. I posed to their YG early Monday.

I've already sent an email to their webmaster; no reply yet.

Even PAS' "other" web page <http://pastro.org/> is over 2 years outdated.

Andrew Fraknoi's (the Chair of the Astronomy Department at Foothill College)
    web page is also hosed:

    <http://www.foothill.fhda.edu/ast/afraknoi.htm>

Perhaps California's pending bankruptcy has forced closure of PAS? That'd be
    a shame.

Wow, that's quite a thought. I called yesterday, science division, and the
secretary shuttled me off to the obs hot line. That was of no use. I called
back later, and only got an answering machine. No return call. I'll call
    again in awhile.

I wasn't joking. Teacher layoffs here in Silicon Valley are approaching

Good luck; it looks bleak and appears the Astronomy Department at Foothill
has bit the dust. Searching for "Astronomy" on their site finds only this
    page:

    <http://www.foothill.edu/ol/InstResAstr.php>

and every link is dead except for the one to the Astronomical Society of
the Pacific. The page itself was last updated in October 2006. Bummer.

If I get a chance today, I'll drive by the observatory and see if there
are any notices on the door. Foothill's Observatory is one of the ones
whose CSC I use to plan my own (local) viewing sessions as you can see
here (all the CSCs flanking me within 10 miles):

Well, this is encouraging. I just arrived home and there was email from
    Foothill's webmaster:

" I'm forwarding your email to the Astronomy department in
" hopes that they can answer.
    "
" They handle the complete ast site so I have very little
    " information at this time.
    "
" Hopefully they will respond soon.

OK, this looks good. The Foothill College webmaster just replied:

" The site is back online and the latest calendar flyer
" will appear online within 15 minutes at the following url:
    "
    "
" Looks like the Friday, June 12 PAS meeting at 7:30 is a go.
" Title for the meeting is Hidden Dimensions in Space

Thanks for your effort. They finally got around to announcing it on their YG
    yesterday. I just read it.

Our next PAS General Meeting will be this coming Friday evening on
June 12 at 7:30PM at our usual meeting place at Foothill Community
College in Los Altos in Rm 8402, Bldg. 8400 next to Parking Lot#8
near the entrance to the College. Our speaker will be Dr. Joanne
Hewett of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory who will speak on
"Space: The Hunt for Hidden Dimensions".

This is an interesting topic, and I would like to go, but I am now hemmed in
by this late notice and remaining time.

    You're very welcome!

When the "ast" server was placed back online yesterday, searches on
"astronomy" again returned valid results, and it appears Foothill
still has an astronomy program. :-)

That's a shame. I wanted to email you right after I received the info
    from Foothill's webmaster at 1:15pm yesterday, but "notvalid2" doesn't
seem to be a valid email address.
