For a 20cm sct, what would be a good barlow for splitting binaries? It
would need to balance performance with economy, I can NOT afford a TeleVue.

    Hi Terry:

If you need to watch the bucks, you could do much worse than the Orion
Shorty Barlow. Optically it's very close to _anything_ on the market.

Most barlow lenses are OK. I'd avoid the variable ones, though.
The only bad barlows are the cheap ones that come with
department store telescopes. I do have an old Edmund barlow
(not the Dakin) that wasn't much good.

    Hi:

I suspect this is the latest thing from China--several vendors appear
to be selling 2x and 3x import APO barlows at the moment. I picked up
one of these "APOs" from Owl Services at a star party recently--I
needed a new 3x and the price was right. Based on the limited amount of
use I've been able to give it due to the weather, it works well, though
I don't know that it's significantly better than the last crop of
Chinese barlows, which worked pretty derned well too.

Frankly, except for imaging, I don't use a barlow per se anymore. For
visual use, I almost always use the Denkmeier Power Switch now.

The Orion's are Japanese. I was surprised. Here's the text from the
    web page:

    Ultrascopic™ 2x 3-Element Barlow, 1.25"
With 27mm of clear aperture, this “long” barlow (5-5/8") from Japan will
please even the most demanding observer. Fits 1.25" focusers or diagonals.

They say the "Shorty" is also from Japan.
