    Default Confused About UTC, DST

OK, this is PRE-Basic but I'm confused. I recently got a new Atlas Goto
mount---trying to get the thing aligned.

I'm in California. Are we -7 or -8 UTC? We are currently IN Daylight
Savings time yes? The manual shows CA as -8 UTC, the skyclock I use
    shows -7UTC

I've always used -7. Does it go to -8 when we change OFF of DST?

    Just muddled.

What does that mean? We are NOW -7 but when we're off DST we're -8, RIGHT?

Now -7; will be -8 on Standard time.

The only really confusing thing is when some hardware has DST On/Off as
    a separate selection

That's the next thing I'll have to try. I suspect it's going to be -7, DST
    = YES

My guess is UT-8, DST=YES, but I agree it's best to try them all out.

Pacific Standard Time (PST) is -8 UTC. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) is
    -7 UTC.

That's because some areas never shift from standard time to daylight
    savings time.

Even more confusing is the fact that the "S" has two different
    meanings:

DST - Daylight SAVING Time (UTC-7 hrs, Summertime)

PST - Pacific STANDARD Time (UTC-8 hrs, Wintertime)

Forgive me if I'm missing something. I get jet lag just thinking about
    the west coast.

"DST" doesn't tell me anything because it doesn't refer to a time zone.

On the east coast we refer to standard time and daylight savings time
as EST and EDT, respectively. Isn't this model used on the west coast
    -- PST and PDT?

Oh, and the answer for the OP is Standard time = UT -8, Savings Time =
    UT -7.

I like the British way: BST = British Summer Time.
