Default Meade ETX UHTC vs. Celestron C90 spotting scope

    Hello:

Anyone any first hand experience concerning the ETX 90 UHTC vs.
Celestron its C90 Maksutov spotting scope?

It seems the Celestron spotting scope is a lot cheaper than the ETX 90
    UHTC OTA.

I own a very old Meade ETX 90 (without UHTC) with absolutely suberb
optics. However, the first ETX series had the problem that the baffle
at the secondary mirror started to take some action and become loose
    when time goes on.

I tried to fix the baffle by two-component glue. However, I scratched
    my secondary mirror markedly.

Meade claims UHTC coatings will improve the overall mirror throughput
from 73% to 88% (you can infer it from their UHTC group homepage). That
is a lot and would mean the ETX turns from 7.5cm into a 8cm performer.

How about the coatings of Celestron in this respect?

Another question: does anyone know whether it is possible to install a
Celestron C90 scope into an old ETX 90 fork mount?

    Thanks a lot,
    Schneewittchen

As an addendum: I am mostly interested into comments of the newer C90?
As it appears from googling around in sci.astro.amateur there have been
some C90 around which are far inferior.

The Celestron C90 now has more or less the same specifications than the
    ETX 90.

    Hi:

The current Celestron 90 MCT is definitely optically inferior to the
ETX. In fact, the couple of examples I've seen don't seem as good as
the old C90. As for coatings, Meade's UHTC is superior to Celestron's
standard coatings, but about the same as Celestron's XLT. If I wanted a
scope in this range, I'd choose the ETX...the "sliding baffle" problem
was cured some time ago, I believe.

re the older C90 spotters: Didn't they focus via a large ring around

    Hi Phil:

No...they focused by turning the corrector end of the scope...which
could be both bad and good.

Ah .. the front of the scope! I remembered some sort of orange (I

    Hello:

You guy got convinced me. Today I bought a ETX-90 UHTC. I will mount it
into my old ETX-90 mount. The guy who sold it ensured me it has very
good optics. He bought it a couple of weeks ago in America during a
trip and sold the mount and ETX-90 UHTC OTA sperately.

I will likely report here whether the UHTC is noticeably better with
    respect to the ordinary coatings.

Btw: It was agood deal since a (spotting scope) ETX-90 UHTC OTA costs
around $550,- in Europe at local dealers. The guy however sold the
couple of weeks old good for around $250,-.
