We're going out tomorrow night to catch a few summer Messiers so maybe I'll
set up my ED80...it might give a comparison....

I'd run some tests comparing the two scopes, and be prepared to tell him
    - "hey, your scope doesn't seem to be working right - you should send it
back so they can fix it". IIRC, you couldn't get diffraction rings.

If he's stuck with a bum scope, he's not going to enjoy the hobby the
way he should, and as someone with more experience and knowledge, you
should really point him in the right direction.

Otherwise, you'll look bad when someone else points out the problem.

Tell me he's an incredibly obnoxious jerk, and I might feel differently.

No, he's a really nice guy. Should I get diffraction rings? I guess I need
to drag my Suiter (SP?) book out again...

Maybe he bought it from Markus without permission.

Have you ever used an achromat Doink? Even achromats aren't as bad as
    you describe! :-)

    awful.

What magnification are you using to try to see diffraction rings?

If you aren't using magnification somewhere close to 50X/inch of aperture
(about 200X with that scope), the diffraction rings won't be visible, for
lack of sufficient magnification to SEE them...

And if you're seeing rippling, or boiling in the field of view, the scope
is either not cooled down sufficiently (this scope should equilibrate
fairly quickly, but still may need a half hour or more before it will
support the high magnification necessary to see diffraction rings), or you
are looking over a hot rooftop (could be yours, or one some distance
away), or other radiational heat source, like a driveway, street, or
    parking lot...

Yes. I have an Orion 120ST achro----and the views are better with less
false color than this ED100. I just didn't know how high to set
expectations. My ED80 is great with barely any false color---it's
detectable if you try to bring it out----bright object, crappy eyepiece.
But this guy's ED100 is loaded with color.

He's coming out tonight and I'll run some tests---high power on bright
object, NO diagonal, compare view with my ED80...those things should clarify
    this.
