    Default Sources for upgrading mount/tripod?

    Glenn,
    Check out www.apogeeinc.com
They sell a generic clone of the vixen/celestron/meade clone GEM mount.
It sells for $159.99 and is a very good price for a GEM mount that can
handle most refractors, reflectors and SCT OTAs up to about 20 pounds.

    Default Sources for upgrading mount/tripod?

I think I could actually get some use out of a
trash scope that has good-enough optics if I find a decent
mount to put it on. I've poked around ads, Web sites,
and searched this newsgroup, but all the options
I've found seem to be specific to the better-known,
higher-end scopes. Does anybody sell a generic mount
I could clamp a generic tube onto?

Is this the sort of thing that might not exist in a
mail order catalog but might exist on somebody's
shop floor? There's no dealer I can walk into
and browse nearby, but I can get to Richmond, VA
or Washington, DC on a weekend. Anybody have a good
recommendation of a place to look?

    Thanks!

The right mount for your telescope depends on how much it weighs and

If you can give us an idea of what kind of scope you're using, you'll
    probably get better feedback.

Thanks! I had actually looked at the first two sites, but

    Sorry, I should have included more detail. It's a 60mm refractor -
a classic trash scope. I thought I was looking for places to look,
so it slipped my mind that people might have specific product
recommendations if I gave more specific information.

The Orion EQ-1 looks like a good choice. Though this tube is
good enough for some uses, if I buy much more than a bottom-end
mount for it, I would be better off putting that money toward
    a better scope instead.

If money is the main issue, you should probably buy a new
scope anyway. You can get an irreproachable scope with much
more aperture for not much more than it will cost you to
    mount your old scope.

However, you may have sentimental attachment to your old
60mm refractor. Also, some of those scope have genuinely
first-rate optics. Then again, others are so bad that I
can hardly stand looking through them.

Have you considered making your own mount?

I read two articles on how to do it. Then I looked

I've made myself, and went back to the "buy" option :-)
