Isn't the 102mm Meade "APO" made in China? These are seem to go for about
$1100 new, probably with more accessories than the bare bones Orion ED80.

The Meade scope is F9 which is right in line with the ED80, though in scaling
the ED80 up linearly as far as color error one would expect it to be more like
    F 9.5.

Cost wise, the $1100 price is probably pretty close to a scaling of the ED-80.

So yeah, as far as I can see there is an 100 mm APO that I believe comes from
    China.

The other one on the horizon is the Burgess Optical scope. Those of us who
have been waiting nearly a year for our supposed 1 month delivery 102 F6
achromats are not holding our breaths in anticipation of an APO though I am
cautiously hopeful that sometime it will indeed arrive. (It being both the
    100mm APO and the 102mm F6 Achromat.)

My thinking is that once the price gets up to over $1000 for the OTA and the
focal ratio starts getting to be F9 or longer, these scopes just do not hold
the same excitement as the $500 ED80. THe longer focal ratio, the added cost
and the larger size all make such a scope less attractive.

That $1000 will buy a 10 inch F6 Discovery DOB or if you add the cost of the
mount to the 102 APO one could just about buy and LX-90.....

They still under horizon line. But they will rise. Do not expect the same
level of quality consitency as in 80mm model.

    Jon, Valery

Thanks for the news on this. A freind of mine is waiting for his
Burgess 102 hopefully it should be in soon. I have the 6" F8 achromat
which is quite good but it would be nice to have something in the
100mm class as a grab and go.
