    Hi:

70 bucks for a Meade orthoscopic?! I think the technical term for his condition
is "loco in the ma-go-go". OTOH, what am I bid for a brace of 80s _Vixen_
    orthos?! :-)

    Peace,

Those old Meade Research Grade orthos are pretty collectable, probably going
    into a curio cabinet somewhere.

You should look a bit closer, Rod. This is one of the more desirable
pieces from yesteryear, a Meade "Research Grade" ortho, and is worth
the seventy smackeroos - maybe more to a collector.

BTW, I also have a complete set of Vixen 1¼ inch "orthoscopics," which
I believe are _not_ true Abbe orthos - more like very good Plössls.
    They work pretty well...

I have some of the Meade RGO's, and they are very nice. And mine don't
need cleaning... But I would not pay $71.25 for one, even if in perfect
condition AND personally autographed by John Diebel...

Now, as a collector's item, well, anything goes there. What the market
will bear... One man's garbage is another man's gold. Who am I to argue
that??? I'm not a collector, even if my "collection" may look like it...
As before, I agree with Rod. But where collectors are concerned, I
    concede you may be correct...

Very interesting, Jan. I have the complete RG set, and find they
compare very favorably with my Pentax SMCs. Not quite up to the TMB
SuperMonos, but excellent nonetheless. I'd be willing to loan you a
    couple for your further evaluation.

Actually these Meade RG Ortho's have quite a reputation for
excellence. They are considered to be above the level of the current
University Orthos and right below the level of the Zeiss and Pentax
SMC's. It's not uncommon for them to command close to $100 ea. even
though they sold for around $50 in the 80's when they were new. You
can't get the same quality these days. The only Ortho's available new
that would approach them are the Takahashi's and they run around $150.

That would be a shame. They are excellent quality, reportedly made for
Meade by Nikon. You'd be hard pressed to find a better planetary
eyepiece these days without spending at least $150. Their value lies
in their use, not their collectability. Have you seen the images
