    Default I'll admit this about Mars...



    I can honestly say that Mars is better than expected for me. In North
    Carolina it is 30 or 40 degrees above the horizon and the opposition
    coincided with the best time of the year for seeing conditions. I
    expected it to be good, but my N11 is giving me the best views of Mars
    that I recall in 35 years of observing. And no dust storms.

    Default I'll admit this about Mars...


    I've been on astronomical summer camp during the opposition. One night we
    had14 young people aged 11-16 observing Mars for the very first time, and
    making a drawing. They said the markings looked a lot like a dog's bone.
    They drew Mars on August 26.

    After coming home, I found this Hubble image, captured on August 26:

    I was stunned at the near-perfect match between this picture and most of the
    drawings. Thrilling.
