I prefer a variable polariser
Two polarising filters that can be rotated against each other - infinitely variable between about 1% light transmission to 99%

And if using a diagonal - the VP filter can be separated into two - put one polariser on the end of the diagonal, and the other piece on the eyepiece - you can then vary the brightness by rotating the eyepiece (no need to remove EP, adjust filter, etc)
